Clueless

I enjoy playing this game because its pretty, but I have absolutely no idea what I am doing and what is happening. I went through the instructions mode twice and I still dont get it. I think Im clearing 16, but more gets cleared up top and then something gets added or subtracted and I dont know why and its not always consistent. I understand the mechanics, but the instructions are not clear. Is there a priority order to the requests up top? Maybe a native English speaker would re-write better instructions.
